Replacement Handles For Windows

Double glazed windows are a popular feature. Over time, they can get worn out or rusted.

You'll need to know the current handle's length of the spindle and its fixings in order to replace it. The best method to do this is to look at the base of your old handle.

Handle

Over time uPVC handles and hinges and window locks may be damaged due to wear and tear or intentional or accidental damage. It can be that the handle or lock becomes difficult to close or open or not locked at all. It's tempting to replace the entire window unit if this happens, but it is not always required. In most instances an upgrade to the handle or lock is all that's needed.

The espagnolette style is the most popular uPVC window handle. This has a spindle which extends from the handle and slot into a gearbox that controls the multipoint locking mechanism in the window. It's a good idea to replace the handle of a uPVC handle using screw covers to protect the screws from corrosion and keep them secure. You can also use a washer, spacer or other sealant to ensure an even tighter fit. A screw cap will stop debris and water from getting into the handle, which can cause damage.

After the handle has been removed from the window it's a good idea to clean the spindle of the new handle as well as the threaded part of the bolt. This will ensure that the new handle fits and works well, and it can also help stop dirt from getting into the multipoint lock.

The step height refers to the distance from the frame or base of the window to where the cockspur's nose handle is located when it is installed.

Hinges

If your windows are beginning to close and open with a visible gap, this can be caused by the hinges not being in line with the frame. This is usually an easy fix and can be solved by installing a new set of replacement window hinges. We offer a range of different hinge types that range from traditional casement window hinges that can be used with a standard or tilt and turn handle through to fire escape egress hinges that are suitable for use on larger sized side-hung windows. These hinges are designed to fully open in the event of an emergency and come with an easy-cleaning feature. We also have hinges with restricted-egress that are designed to restrict the opening angle of a window to 100mm maximum. This is ideal for homes with children.

A squeaky hinge could be an indication that the hinges must be replaced. This is typically due to metal hitting metal. A small amount of lubricant can help, however should the noise continue to be heard, it is likely that the hinges will need to be replaced.

This is due to plumb windows being capable of avoiding binding options. The operating sash is aligned with the frame so that the window will close and open in a proper manner. A window that's not plumb may have difficulty opening and closing or become damaged over time, causing problems with the seal and appearance of the window.

You can buy replacement windows hinges made of upvc that are available in imperial or metric measurements. In general, the sizes in metric are more precise but this isn't really noticeable once they are fitted. Crank

If you are unable to secure your window or the multipoint lock is broken, it may also be worth looking into replacing this part of the hardware as well.

A new window crank can be replaced with minimal effort, but it's crucial to buy the right size replacement. Make sure the replacement has the same step in height as the previous one and can be measured by measuring the distance between the crank arm guide bushing and the notch on the track running across the bottom of the window frame. Alternatively, you can determine the length of the spindle that is on your existing handle to find out what size you require to replace it with.

The type of handle you choose for your window will determine the type of crank mechanism that is required for your casement and window awnings. Espag external door handles are equipped with a mental spindle on their back, which is connected to the window frame and drives the window mechanism, while cockspur handles feature pegs that are held in place by screws of three or four which are fixed to the frame and sash.

Once you've identified the right replacement window handle, it's simple to install. Remove any screws that attach to the trim from the casement cover, and gently lift the cover off to expose the insides of the window operator (Photo 1). Remove any trim screws that are rusted and compare the new operating lever with the old to ensure that they match. Then screw the replacement to the window frame, and replace any screws that were damaged or bent, then put the casement cover on top of the mechanism.
