Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

Macaws are a great companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. They are the perfect addition to families with a variety of members. They can easily become bored and will discover ways to entertain themselves even if their owners aren't engaged with them often enough. If they aren't socialized properly, macaws can become aggressive and even bite. It is important to establish clear boundaries so the harlequin macaw does not feel threatened.

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds that love to play, climb and interact. They should spend at least two to three hours every day outside for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They love playing games, learning tricks and listening to music. Lolita's captors, also known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her at risk. They are a danger to her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also keep her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her to be a family member, on a plan to eventually transport her to open waters. The plan would have included a sanctuary in Washington's west coast, where she could live for the remainder of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the actual ocean and not a concrete tank.

If the plan was implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild, killers whales are social animals who bond with their family members until death. Lolita, who has lived alone at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is being released into the wild. People from all over the country have demanded Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. Lolita's Diet
