How to Repair Bifold Door Top Roller Guide

If your bifold door is sticking, it's likely that they require some maintenance. They may require cleaning, lubricated or adjusted. The problem could be caused by a loose bolt at the top pivot or by the top guide roller.

This kit includes all the necessary hardware to bring your bi-fold closet door to its optimal performance.

Remove the Door

It may appear complicated and challenging to put in an internal set of repair bifold door top pivot doors however for those who are DIYers with some experience, it's actually a breeze. The frame is not the issue however, getting the doors to fold and close smoothly is. Since bifold doors are complicated machines, they may need some 'tuning' to continue functioning properly. This might be something as easy as tightening a screw or as complex as removing the door and replacing the pivot pin or roller.

Most times you can fix these issues by making a few simple adjustments, without having to remove the doors. Take off the Roller Guide

After removing the guide, carefully cut the remaining finish off the foot of the guide using a razor to separate it from blank rod. This will make it easier to remove and will prevent damage to the new guide foot. Be cautious while doing this, as the guide foot is very sharp and could potentially cut or nick your fingers.

You will probably have to use a bit of force to pull the guide off, but take care not to break or chip the foot. Once you have separated the guide from the rod blank, make sure to get rid of all the threads and epoxy that remain in the place the guide was attached. This will prevent future problems with the guide.

After removing the guide, you can test the new guide by placing it in its permanent location and then applying a few rotations of masking tape or another form of guide tubing to keep it in place. This will allow you double check the guide spacing and alignment to ensure that everything is set up correctly. This is essential to avoid future problems regardless of whether you use the CRB Spine Finder and Deflection System or just eyeball it.

The final step is to replace the door. If the guide is in the proper position and is working just as it should, you can proceed. Make sure that any screws or pins were removed or loosening must be replaced and tightened properly after you've finished.

Remove the Bottom Pivot

Bifold doors are a stunning addition to any home but often they require a bit of tweaking or adjustment to stay in good shape. Some issues can be addressed by keeping the doors in place. Other issues will require the doors be removed. This guide will show you how to take off the internal bifold door roller replacement door pins, rollers, and pivots.

Gathering your tools is the first step. Making sure you have everything in place prior to time will make it easier later on in the project. You'll also require a screwdriver and pliers. Another common problem with bifold doors is that it scrapes against the floor when it closes or opens. This can happen after adding carpet or other flooring materials which require the doors be raised slightly to allow for clearance. The removal of the bottom pivot adjustment screw, loosening the top track's mounting screws, and moving the anchor/pivot pin is typically enough to eliminate this issue.

A new set of top roller guides is a cheap solution to a problem that can make bifold doors difficult to operate. They are usually available at the local hardware store in the door section. However they can also be purchased online from several suppliers. You'll also require the squeeze-clamp and a tiny container of Elmer's wood adhesive that is sold in big box stores. The clamp is used to keep the area being repaired closed tightly after the glue has been inserted and dried.
