How to Replace an replacement key audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit challenging since there are two pins for the connector and they serve different purposes but the most effective way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. Check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing any more. Today, i pulled out the spark plugs, three were drenched with gazoline the 4th one was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is easy to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, audi tt replacement key AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc. In order to do this it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will show codes that could cause the engine shutting down.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, or a misfire in gear. If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is likely that your sensor is failing and should be replaced. They're inexpensive and audi Keys Replacement Cost easy to locate, especially if they're an Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a myriad of issues in your car. It is a crucial part of your Audi Spare Key Cost's transmission, since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is spinning. This sensor could cause the transmission to fail and other components in the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49, via an uncolored wire. The ECU utilizes this signal to control fuel and boost, and Audi tt Replacement key also timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between the ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) as well as between T6a/1, and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. There should be the resistance to be around 1000 ohms in these areas.
